Playing God With Alan Faneca

If you had a 300 lb., know-it-all, walking, talking, red-headed crybaby like Alan Faneca on your team, what would you do?

Signing him is the easy way out. He’s a perennial all-pro, though aging, and a fringe hall of fame candidate. However, giving him the big bucks he wants will make it difficult to sign some other guys like Troy Polamalu and Big Ben in the not so distant future. Granting him his release is possible, though you’re getting nothing in return and giving away a guy who appears to be a salary bargain at the moment. A trade would be a tough sell, as the sign and trade is almost non-existent in the NFL due to the wonky salary cap restrictions. Certainly though, some team somewhere would be willing to mortgage a draft pick to rent Faneca for the year. And finally, you can do nothing…simply saddle up and hold on for one more year, hoping the guy doesn’t suddenly go nuts and do something subversive to undermine the team. So, what do you do?

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

  1. Bobby Says:

Men and women everyday risk their lives fighting for our country in our armed services, for peanuts. He should quit being a little bitch and accept he signed a contract. Funny how players cry when they think they are worth more money, but how many do you see take a huge paycut when they drastically underperform?

The Rooneys know what they are doing. Football is a team sport, and all the high price overpaid past their prime free agents that leave Pittsburgh rarely have success anywhere else anyhow, with the Rod Woodson being the lone exception I can think of.

  2. Mark Walters Says:

Keep him for 2007, then collect a 3rd round compensatory pick for 2008.

  3. Lou Certo Says:

Funny how Faneca never complained when his last contract made him the highest paid guard in the entire NFL.

Is it the Steeler’s fault that so many other teams have innapropriately OVERPAYED marginal interior linemen this past off-season?

You signed. You are a millionaire 20-times over.

    Shut up and play.

  4. Michael Says:

I agree with Mark Walters…Keep him for 2007, then collect a 3rd round compensatory pick for 2008. Even though Alan Faneca is unhappy, I expect that he will still perform at 100% for 2007.

  5. Thejim Says:

I’m happy and somewhat surprised to see that there’s little support for actually signing him to a mega-bucks deal.

  6. Russell Clark Says:

To play the game that you love, plus making millions to do it is a blessing. Our society have screwed these guys up. What if they had to really work for a living? These guys make more in one day what most of us make in a year, and we don’t get season breaks. Faneca should count his blessings, shut up, and quit trying to be greedy! Players / agents are bench marking other players of their position and see how much that player is making. If that player is making a few million dollars more, then we need to renegotiate. That player is not worth the money he’s being paid and neither is Faneca. I’ve always been a real Steeler Fan and I don’t want any team member on the team that doesn’t want to be there. No matter how much he thinks he’s worth. Faneca’s not happy as a Steeler, and he’s not going to put out 100% in his last season. We care about winning another SuperBowl, not Faneca’s personel feelings. TRADE HIM NOW!

  7. J.J. HEATH Says:

trade him, i he’s not happy let him go.i think he’s really not satisfied with the new coach, i agree wth what russell clark says if he’s not happy as a steeler he’s not going to give a 100%. if we are going to win another superbowl we don’t need any distractions. TRADE HIM LET HIM GO!!!

  8. john stockhausen Says:

I’m surprised that Steelers’ fans are resorting to name calling- That seems to be more of a Cleveland Browns fan type of behavior. Alan Faneca has helped us go to the playoffs consistently. I do think he should play out the contract, and get his big $$ with another team. He has enough money to retire and take care of his family, even if he’s injured- which he deserves. I’m proud of him and his contribution to the best team in the NFL. Go Steelers!

  9. Senwel Says:

I can’t feel sorry for Faneca at all! The way I see it, he made over 40 million BUCKS since he been with the Steelers. He signed the last contract without a gun being held to his head and now he throws the no-repect card out! That a spit in the face to the Rooneys and the Steelers nation. As much as we need him (I wished the Steeler would have picked a guard in the 1st. Round this year), we need to have him play out his last year and get a compensatory pick for him in 2009. He’ll play well next year because he will be auditioning for other teams. Probably Pittsburgh West (Ariz.) will pick him up or Pittsburg North (New England). They picked up everything else we left go.

  10. J.BILYK Says:

I say keep him. If he does not put out 100% he is only hurting himself. If he does sand bag all season, when it come time for him to go after the big bucks in free agency, what team wants to pay big dollars for and aging lineman who had a bad year. No, keep him and he will play at 100%.

  11. Jesse Stevenson Says:

Alan Faneca was the highest paid Guard in the NFL the last time he signed a new contract! That alone should tell him and his agent how the Steelers F/O feel about him. I agree with the Rooney’s 100%! Do not mortgage your future for one individual player, I say try and trade this guy for a 3rd round pick, this issue is not going to die, it will become an even more distraction.

  12. GrangerMatt Says:

It’s all sour grapes from him. He’s just pissed Grimm didn’t get the job, Joey’s out, and he’s has no insurance after this year. He’s financially set for life, and he’s under contract with essentially a new team. It’s unreal – on any given Sunday in the burg he’s one of the wealthiest of the 10′s of thousands of people there.

How these negotiations come as a shock to him is beyond me. This is SOP for the Rooneys, one of the NFL’s most respected owners.

Let Tomlin show what he can do with this early in his head coaching career. IF it become a clubhouse distraction – trade him. I’d rather be 6-10 with players who want to be here than 10-6 with whiny, selfish Fanecas.

  13. Damon DeArment Says:

What the Steelers front office is probably thinking(I hope), as the schrewd businessmen they are, would be to have Faneca play out his contract for 2007. Then they could slap the “Franchise” tag on him for 2008 and make another team (ie-Arizona) compensate us with a 1st round pick. Considering Arizona’s yearly high draft position, this could work out pretty good for us.

  14. John Meketa Says:

Show him the game film from the 2 Baltimore games and the San Diego game. He was OWNED in all three!! He is on the decline. I have always liked him as a player, I just didn’t know that he was a whinning puss!!

  15. David Bragg Says:

As far as renegotiating now , I say no . He signed a contract and the final year of that contract should be honored , period . As far as a new deal is concerned , I agree with Alan that he should be paid as one of the top 4 or 5 lineman in the game . Hes been an all-pro and pro-bowler many times and his career stats speak for themselves . The problem I have with this is , the way hes going about it . Dont take it to the press and dont take it public . That type of negotiating will never work with Dan Rooney no matter who the player is or how good he is . Dont believe me ? Just ask Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris a perennial all pro running back and 4 time superbowl champion who was cut outright in the summer of 1984 . Franco was an 11 year veteran and one of the greatest backs to play the game . If Alan Faneca thinks it cant happen to him hes sorely mistaken .

  16. Troy Miller Says:

I agree with Meketa. I have never seen Faneca beaten like a rented mule so many times in one year. Hell, he barely got out of his stance and Ravens were on Ben or Willie. His actions show that he never deserved to be captain. I could care less if he shows up at all. What a #%$#^^#! Get lost Faneca!

  18. Russell Clark Says:

Trade Alan. We can’t loose with a trade. He’s not happy and tries to influence other team mates to turn against the Steeler organization. Who wants that kind of negative motivation. Steelers are a Nation, we don’t need individual cry-babies on this team. There’s no I in TEAM. First you have to prove yourself as an outstanding player in order to receive big bucks, which he have not done lately. Alan is on his way out as far as performance. Good while it lasted, but he’s seen his better days.

  19. Faneca Makes Distracting Remarks That He Won’t Be A Distraction | sportsocracy [dot] org Says:

[...] Faneca is one of the best guards to ever play for the Steelers and I've argued that he's a fringe hall of fame candidate.  And even though he's on the downswing of his career, he's probably still the best offensive lineman they have.  Still though, his mouth continues to run, cementing him as the single biggest whiner on the team, even surpassing Hines Ward.  He's the A1 embodiment of the attitude and sense of entitlement that doomed the team last year.  Why not just play well and make the Steelers look foolish for letting you go, instead of publicly opining on why the team owes him?  That's the definition of distraction.
