In separate incidents this weekend, Steelers guard Alan Faneca signed a big money deal with the Jets and QB Ben(ihana) Roethlisberger signed a mega-extension to keep him Pittsburgh through 2015.
Faneca's Jets deal, which he'll sign today, presumably in blood, is good for 5 years and $40 million, slightly more per year than uber-guard Steve Hutchinson got from the Vikings in 2006 (7 years, $49 million for him). Of course, with back loading and all of the other crazy salary cap tricks teams use, Faneca will never see that full $40 million, though the $21 million in guarantees will probably be enough to console him.
Big Ben celebrated his 26th birthday yesterday by finalizing an 8-year, $102 million dollar deal with the Steelers, which he'll likely also sign today. His deal is good for $36 million in guaranteed money, which is $1.5 million more than the human Mastercard billboard, Peyton Manning, got in his deal in 2004.

Faneca, A great runblocker but mediocre pass blocker. I saw every steeler game in 07 and he was responsible for about 5-7 sacks from interior D-lineman. Maybe that could be getting adjusted to Mahan, but he got his butt whopped for at least 5 sacks. Most sacks come from the edge, but the steelers let alot of interior lineman sack Ben, and Faneca was a problem. I’m glad the steelers didn’t give Big Red the bank. He’ not worth it at age 31.
Good for Ben, he does deserve the money. Steelers could have easily had over 60 sacks given up in 2007 if it were not for Ben’s strength and athleticism. He’s worth the money. IN this day, you need a franchise quarterback to get to the super bowl… or in the rare case the Steelers 1974 or Ravens 2000 defense + average quarterback. But without a top tier QB, you will be one and done in the playoffs.

I couldn’t agree with you more on Faneca, Jack. He’s still a great run blocker, but his pass protection has taken a decided turn for the worse in the past two seasons. The price that NY paid for him is way too steep.
